G20 I

What is the G20?
The Group of Twenty(G20) is a way for the richest and most powerful countries in the world to communicate their ideas and opinions and it provides the leaders of these nations the chance for them to establish connection, communicate their concerns and improve the global laws and regulations. Of the many issues they discuss, the most common ones are:
  • Environment and Global climate

  • Political problems
  • Global trade agreements
  • Economic issues and Policies
  • Global conflict
  • World poverty and World hunger
  • Worldwide education and healthcare

These meetings provides the world with the chance of eternal peace, as the leaders decide to communicate their views rather than start wars. The world's worst problems used to be political, as the countries used to fight and argue about their issues, but that all changed after World War Two and nations started to communicate their problems. This caused the world nations shifted their focus to the economy and trying compete in the world economic system and global trade and that lead to the creation of the world bank and the reason why the the Group of Seven(G7) decided to create the G20. But unlike their founder, the G20s main goal is not about political problems, it's to improve the world economic trade and prevent a worldwide depression.

Members and Guests
Member nations of the G20 were chosen based on their status and wealth, while the guests nations were simply countries that needed their voices to be heard. This meant that poorer and weaker countries still got some recognition they needed and deserve, but this at the same time meant that they were usually isolated and didn't have much power over what happens to the global economy. Other groups and representatives attend the meetings as member and try to convince the leader to listen to their point of view. Some of these groups and people are:

  • The United Nations
  • The World Trade Organization
  • World Health Organization
  • International Monetary Fund chief
  • International Labour Organization
  • President of World Bank
  • G20's Financial Stability Board
  • Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development

On the other hand, to be a guest a country has to be invited by the nation that's hosting the meeting. For example, when Germany hosted the G20 earlier on this year, it invited many under-represented countries such as Singapore, Senegal and Guinea. This meant that these countries now have a chance to represent their ideas and improve upon their own contribution to the global economy. While you might think this is useful, to be heard from once a decade is not so useful for the minor nations, as they don't have the chance to keep communicating their problems on a bigger scale.

Other Facts
  • In more Recent years, the summit between leader have turned into non-cooperative meetings, as the leaders are tending to argue more and worsen issues rather than solve them. An example of this is how Trump and Putin are receiving a lot of backlash for the choices they make, such as them not believing in the Paris agreement, how trump is attempting to ban refugees from seeking shelter in the US and Putin not letting go of the land he stole during his attempted invasion of Ukraine.
  • Many people appose the the summit as they believe it only makes things worse. This causes people to riot and protest around the area where the meetings are held as a way to send a message that those leaders don't really care about the best interest of their people but rather about how this may benefit themselves. The largest riot ever happened earlier this year when the summit was held in Hamburg, Germany, some say trump could be the reason of the increasing numbers of rioters.
  • The G20 tends to be secretive about their meetings, as most of them are not broadcasted. This means that the public only gets a hint on what they are discussing, this has made the public and the media supercilious about what they are truly doing in the meeting and if they have something to hide. When asked, the world leaders tend to change the subject, leaving behind an unanswered mystery.
